As storm season approaches, homeowners and landlords across the UK are being reminded to take proactive steps to protect their properties.

With severe weather events becoming more frequent, now is the perfect time to make sure your home is ready for high winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding.

A few simple maintenance checks can make all the difference in keeping your property safe and minimising the risk of costly storm damage or insurance claims.

Claims

1. Secure outdoor items

Loose garden furniture, parasols, trampolines, and play equipment can easily become airborne in strong winds. Pack them away or secure them firmly to prevent damage to your property or neighbouring homes.

2. Inspect fences, gates, and sheds

Look for loose panels, weak posts, or damaged hinges. Repairing or reinforcing them now can stop them from collapsing during a storm.

3. Clear gutters and drains

Blocked gutters and downpipes are a leading cause of water damage. Clear out any leaves, moss, or debris so that rainwater can flow freely and reduce the risk of leaks or flooding.

4. Check your roof

Cracked or missing tiles can let in water or loosen further in high winds. Inspect your roof safely from the ground or ask a qualified roofer to carry out repairs before the next storm arrives.

5. Check trees and overhanging branches

Inspect the trees and overhanging branches that are on or near your property - especially those near vehicles or power lines. Strong winds can break branches and cause serious damage. Always check your local council’s guidelines before trimming, particularly if you’re in a conservation area or there’s a tree preservation order.

6. Test sump pumps and drainage systems

If your property is prone to flooding, make sure your sump pumps and flood defences are working properly. A quick check could save you thousands in water damage repairs.

7. Check windows and doors

Ensure all windows and doors close and lock securely. Adding weather seals or draught strips can help prevent rain and wind from getting inside.

8. Prepare for power cuts

Keep a torch, spare batteries, and a fully charged power bank handy. It’s also smart to store bottled water and non-perishable food in case of extended outages.

9. Review your home insurance

Now’s the time to double-check your home and contents insurance. Make sure your storm cover and sums insured are accurate. If you’re unsure, our team can help review your policy and ensure you’re properly protected.

After the storm

Once it’s safe to do so, inspect your property from the ground. Take photos of any damage before arranging repairs - these will help support any insurance claims.

Preparing in advance is the best defence against the unpredictable British weather. A few small actions today may help you by reducing stress, damage, and expense tomorrow.

If you’d like expert advice or a complementary no-obligation policy review, get in touch with our team. Together, we can help you check that your cover is suitable for your needs and protection.

Cover is subject to insurers policy terms, conditions, and exclusions.
